Despite a slump in high street spending, online sales are rising strongly in January this year, according to CBI figures. The data, published in the CBI Distributive Trades Survey, shows that e-commerce was the only part of the UK retail market to report growth in the first two weeks of January 2012.

Earlier this week, eBay's President and CEO, John Donahoe, spoke about online retail and eBay’s position in today’s digital world at the Digital Life Design conference in Munich.

Speaking about the rise of mobile commerce, John also informed the audience that half of retail transactions in 2010 involved consumers accessing the web at some point during the shopping experience, highlighting that the line between online and offline commerce is blurring.

John went on to say that eBay has no intention of competing with retailers, but instead is focused on eBay becoming an enabler, to allow retailers adapt the shopping experience for customers in a mobile world.

The European Commission has released an action plan with the aim of building trust in a digital single market and to encourage growth in the e-commerce sector. The action plan outlines 16 initiatives aimed at doubling the share of e-commerce in retail sales (currently 3.4%) and the internet sector in European GDP (currently less than 3%) by 2015.

According to online data experts Experian Hitwise, Boxing Day last year was the busiest day ever for online retailers in the UK. On 26th December, 2011, 96 million visits were paid to UK retail websites, spending a total of 13 million hours online. This figure sees a substantial 19.5% increase on the same day the previous year, which saw 80.5 million online visits.
